All about the U.S. Constitution...
Members of the Constitutional Convention signed the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Some of the most noted people that signed the Constitution were: George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin. Thomas Jefferson was involved with the Constitution but did not sign it because he was in France at that time.
Before the United States Constitution was written the people of America used the Articles of Confederation as law.
The U.S. Constitution is the highest law in the United States. It is supreme over all state constitutions.
The Bill of Rights were the first 10 amendments to the Constitution of all 27 amendments.
The first 10 amendments were:
1) Religious and Political Freedom: Congress must not interfere with the freedom of religion, speech or press, assembly, and petition
2) Right to Bear Arms: The people may bear arms
3) Quartering of Troops: Soldiers may not be arbitraily quartered on the people
4) Searches and Seizures: unreasonable searches are forbidden
5) Right to Life, Liberty, and Propery: The individual is guaranteed certain rights when on trial and the right to life, liberty, and property
6) Protection in Criminal Trials: An accused person has important righs, the right to a speed and public trial by an impartial jury of state and district
7) Suits at Common Law: The rules of common law are recognized,
8) Bail and Punishments: Excessive fines and unusual punishments are forbidden
9) Concerning Rights Not Enumerated: The people retain rights not here enumerated, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people
10) Powers Reserved to the States and to the People: Powers not delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states and the people
