The Holocaust
The Holocaust was a genocide led by Adolf Hitler after he came to power in Germany. The Holocaust began in 1933 and ended in 1945 when the Nazis were defeated by the Allied powers. In addition to Jews being targeted, homosexuals, Jehovah's witnesses, and the disabled were also targeted. The Jews were sent to camps. There were several different types of camps. There were concentration, extermination, labor, prisoner-of-war, and transit camps. One of the first concentration camps was in Dachau and it opened on March 20, 1933.
After World War II's beginning, Jews were ordered to leave their nicer homes and go live in the ghettos. The ghettos were filled with smaller apartments and were oftened shared between more than one family. here were curfews and starting in 1939, Jews were ordered to wear a yellow star of David to be idenifed. It is estimated that 11 million were killed during the Holocaust. 6 Million were Jews and 2/3 of all European Jews were murdered.
